This review helps patients and family understand that adult degenerative scoliosis and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis are not the same problem; it relates more to aging, degeneration of the discs and facet joints, spinal imbalance, low back and leg pain, and nerve compression; the focus of adult- scoliosis management is usually not simply pursuing “a straighter angle,” but combining pain, neurological symptoms, functional limitation, imaging change, and quality of life to judge whether to observe, treat conservatively, or proceed to further surgical assessment.

This page is a plain-words guide to a published paper — for health education and doctor–patient communication only, not a diagnosis or treatment advice. If you think you might have scoliosis, see an orthopedic or spine specialist.
