AIS itself usually does not mean an adolescent must stop PE class or completely avoid exercise; appropriate physical activity has value for overall health, fitness, psychological state, and quality of life. But exercise is not a substitute for treating scoliosis, and cannot guarantee reducing the Cobb angle. What truly matters is to distinguish, based on the angle, symptoms, brace situation, growth stage, and the doctor's advice, normal exercise, exercise that needs adjustment, and pain or abnormal presentations that need evaluation first.

This page is a plain-words guide to a published paper — for health education and doctor–patient communication only, not a diagnosis or treatment advice. If you think you might have scoliosis, see an orthopedic or spine specialist.
